Darren Fleming brings us his tips and selections for Newbury tomorrow, including the feature race at Newbury, the Swettenham Stud Fillies’ Trial Stakes at 2.10, and the Bathwick Tyres Carnarvon Stakes at 4.20!
The Listed fillies trial at 2.10 is the feature race at Newbury and both Firdaws for Roger Varian and Starscope for John Gosden sit at the top of the market at about 7-4 generally. Both have run well in group company but of the two, my preference is for Starscope. She ran a blinder to come a distant second in the Guineas recently and the form has already been franked by The Fugue who was back in fourth. The price is short but the form looks good and she is the one they all have to beat on Friday.
Firdaws has done little wrong in her short career and there is no obvious reason why she should not run well too but unlike Starscope and a number of the others, she has not run yet this season and it is impossible to say how she has progressed through the winter which makes her price too short for me.
Lacily represents Godolphin and has place possibilities and Shirocco Star looks a decent horse but the price of 10-1 does not look particularly generous based on what she has actually achieved on the track. Young Louis also dismissed as she looks like she needs a drop in grade to get near the winners enclosure.
Momentary represents the Queen but again based on her debut run she does not look capable of beating the top two in the market. The Mick Channon-trained Gold Show was a fair way behind Noble Mission on debut but I do think Noble Mission could be decent so it would not be the greatest surprise if she was able to run into a place.
The other horse to consider for a place is Marant Bay, who won on heavy ground over 1 mile 2 furlongs at Sandown recently. The record of Sir Henry Cecil in this race recently (won in 2009 and 2010 and did not have a runner last year) is certainly worth considering and she could be the forecast play.
In summary, Starscope should be too good if running up to her Guineas form behind Homecoming Queen. I will be opposing Firdaws based on the question marks that hang over her. Marant Bay and Gold Show may challenge for places at decent prices.
The other listed race on the card is at 4.20 and Burwaaz heads the ratings having been placed in a Group 2 last season and has already beaten a few of these earlier in the season. This is on grass rather than the Kempton all weather surface, but other than that I see no reason why the Ed Dunlop colt shouldn’t confirm the form with those rivals.
Lethal Force has run respectably at group level, whilst Swiss Spirit looks like he could win at this level following a solid second behind the useful looking Valbchek, showing a good turn of foot. He’s likely to be winning this season but he may bump into one or two too good on Friday. Inetrobil is another who has run well enough at Group level and may be the one to give Burwaaz most to do. Fanrouge has done his connections proud, but this looks a step too far for him.
However for the winner, Burwaaz looks the form choice and is the one for me at 7/2 with Bet365. Introbil may be best of the rest at 7/1 with Ladbrokes.
