Ticket Competition: Doncaster Derby Day Giveaway!
Featured
Horse Racing Tavern has teamed up with Doncaster Racecourse to offer three lucky winners a pair of grandstand tickets for their Derby Day meeting on Saturday 1st June!
They don’t come much bigger than the Epsom Derby. Flat racing’s Blue Riband event is second to only the Grand National in capturing the attentions of the general public.
Last year saw the Aidan O’Brien-trained Camelot sear to victory before attempting an history-making third leg of the British Triple Crown in the Ladbrokes St Leger, right here at Doncaster.
The Jim Bolger-trained 2000 Guineas winner Dawn Approach bids to emulate his famous sire New Approach and record victory on the Downs, but you can be sure the Ballydoyle battalions will be gearing up to retain their crown in the prestigious race.
Derby Day is the event all horse racing fans cannot miss so go to Doncaster for seven races on Town Moor PLUS all the action from Epsom will be shown LIVE on the big screen. For more information or to buy tickets, visit Doncaster Racecourse website at www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk.
We’re giving away a pair of grandstand tickets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week for three lucky winners! For your chance to win, simply either tweet the following:

Racing News: Wyn Evans named Kauto Star’s Biggest Fan
WYN EVANS NAMED KAUTO STAR’S BIGGEST FAN
IF you thought Alan Partridge’s stalker was committed – or rather deserved to be committed, seehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OrAGZru4As if you want to compare – then let us introduce you to Wyn Evans, winner of Betfair and Haydock Park’s search for Kauto Star’s biggest fan
And, in Kauto Star’s trainer Paul Nicholls’ own words, Evans’ entry makes “Alan Partridge’s obsessive fan look tame by comparison – and a worthy, if slightly worrying, winner. We look forward, with some trepidation, to meeting him at Haydock on Saturday!”
Evans may not be one of the seven applicants who had a Kauto Star tattoo adorning their body – including one frighteningly painful offering (see among the pictures attached), which wins one of five runner-up awards – but the man’s soul is presumably yellow, green and purple.
Ever since he saw Kauto Star win the 2006 Betfair Chase on TV, Evans has never missed a race featuring the legendary chaser – and his obsession with the horse has ramped up a notch since 2010, as the attached pictures pay testament to.
A seemingly shameless Evans, a respectable banker by day – even though his office is a mini-shrine to the great chaser – has done the following, among other things:
- In 2010 he had a jumper knitted in Kauto’s colours and proudly boasts that he wears it “whenever I am at the races – or any occasion I can show it off.” Including “dress down days at work,” according to his daughter.
Very Partidgesque….his daughter must be very proud….
- “Probably my greatest achievement” he writes – which must be very comforting to his wife and daughter – is inspiring an office of non-racing bankers to follow in Kauto’s fortunes leading up the to last year’s Gold Cup.
Racing For Change, eat your heart out….
- His family made him a Kauto Star cake for his 50th birthday, when his wife also replaced all the photos of her with pictures of Kauto.
In spite of the above….
- In aid of charity, he hosted his own Kauto-themed version of Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me, “where all guests had to wear green and yellow and spent the evening watching all my recordings of his great races.”
What TV Gold that would have made….
- He names all his quiz teams the “Kauto’s Stars”, including at his bank’s Manchester Regional Quiz Night.
That would have gone down well with the bosses. Banks love a gambler, after all….
- He claims to have led the paddock cheering for Kauto Star at Haydock last year – “you can clearly hear me on Youtube” – where even “Alice Plunkett complemented me on the jumper.”
After much discussion by the judges, he narrowly avoided instant disqualification after Plunkett’s seal of approval…
- He emailed Tanya Stevenson last year, trying to get on the Morning Line at Haydock on Betfair Chase Day, citing his “Kauto love”
Unfortunately for Evans, Paul Nicholls just shaded it as the main guest on the programme. But ever-diplomatic Tanya acknowledged in an email response that Evans “must be his number one fan”
- Last year he grew a moustache for Movember – and, you’ve guessed it, dyed it yellow, green and purple.
Pure class….
On a more serious note and all joking aside, Evans stood out for his dedication and love of the horse, and he wins a VIP day out at Haydock on Saturday, where he will get to meet the horse and all the connections.
Evans said: “I cannot tell you how special Saturday will be – a genuine dream come true. I just hope that I do not become too starstruck. ”
And he certainly faced some stiff competition.
The five runner-ups included Chris Reddross, a businessman from Glasgow, who now runs “Kauto Couriers” – and one of his vans will be at Haydock on Saturday, having been adorned in Kauto colours just for the day. He wins some signed memorabilia, including the Kauto Star book kindly donated by the Racing Post, along with the aforementioned “Girl With The Agony Tattoo”, Diana Young, as well as a young Lois Mortimer, whose bedroom heavily features the horse and who has “Kauto v Denman races up the stairs” with her sister.
Niki Jones, who has painstakingly cross–stitched pictures of the horse, also narrowly missed out, as did the bride, Michelle Hussey, who themed her wedding around the horse, including down to the men’s cufflinks and her own garter.
Are you Kauto Star’s biggest fan?
CALLING ALL KAUTO STAR LOVERS – BE CROWNED HIS BIGGEST FAN!
CALLING all Kauto Star lovers!
Do you want to be crowned his biggest fan?
Well, in celebration of Kauto Star’s four wins in the Betfair Chase – and remember he is parading at Haydock Park on Saturday 24 November, Betfair Chase Day, when a statue will also be unveiled in his honour – Haydock Park and sponsor Betfair are launching a campaign to search for the National Hunt legend’s biggest fan.
Whether it be naming your first born “Kauto”, dying your hair purple, yellow and green or painting your car in the Kauto Star colours all forms of dedication will considered by the judging panel!
In fact the more extreme your devotion the better!
Whoever is judged to be Kauto Star’s biggest fan will receive a fantastic prize of a day out at the Betfair Chase, with a three-course lunch in one of the top restaurants for themselves and a guest, as well as the chance to be in the paddock when Kauto Star parades before racing.
Finally, and we have saved the best until last, the winner will have the chance to meet the legend himself and be photographed with him.
To enter simply email the team at the address below and explain why you deserve to be crowned Kauto Star’s Biggest Fan.
Haydockpark.racing@thejockeyclub.co.uk
A decision will be made in the week of the Betfair Chase and the winner notified by email. Photos, videos, poems, letters and all other forms of entry will all be accepted. Entries close at 12 noon on Wednesday 21 November.
The Betfair Chase Festival takes place at Haydock Park on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 November, featuring the Betfair Chase on the Saturday, a race that Kauto Star won four times in his career, including his emotional 2011 victory. This year’s renewal is set to be just as thrilling, with a top class field entered, including former Gold Cup winners Long Run and Imperial Commander, Cue Card and rising stars such as Silviniaco Conti.
